Cotopaxi volcano is one of Ecuador's most active volcanoes, and it has been emitting smoke and ash for the last 6 weeks. Various public areas, including the Centro de Salud in Tumbaco, have posted a detailed evacuation route in the case of a major eruption. School children are required to bring in 'Cotopaxi kits' consisting of food, water, and a face mask, and teachers conduct Cotopaxi drills to prepare in case an eruption occurs during school hours. It is fascinating to observe the role of public health in preparing for natural disaster in a setting so unlike ours in Georgia.
